Born into a family of seafarers in Sorrento, Italy, Captain Ubaldo Armellino knew the ocean was in his heart from a young age. After graduating from nautical college, Captain Armellino spent several years working on cargo ships and oil tankers before joining Regent Seven Seas Cruises in 1999, where he was involved in the construction of Seven Seas Navigator®, serving as Second Officer.
With almost 17 years of experience navigating Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ luxurious ships to spectacular destinations across the globe, Captain Armellino talks to us about one of his favorite destinations – big, bold and beautiful Alaska.
What do you love most about sailing in Alaska?
I love the freedom and sense of peacefulness. Sailing in Alaska is absolutely breathtaking. All of the scenery in Alaska is unique; the shiny snow on top of the mountains, the reflex of the trees and mountains in the crystal clear water, the gentle breeze while sailing, the whales, orcas and, when I am lucky, the aurora borealis that paints the sky with fabulous colors.
Reaching Snow Pass is always a good place to invite our guests to do some whale-watching. Usually there will also be a sea lion or two sleeping on the buoy on the east side of the channel.
What are your favorite places to visit in Alaska?
The places I most enjoy visiting are Juneau, Hubbard Glacier and Sitka. I also enjoy sailing past Tracy Arm fjord.
What is most unique about Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Alaska voyages?
We can sail into exciting and interesting ports whereas bigger ships simply can’t. Exploring the smaller fjords gives our guests the privilege and pleasure to see amazing scenery up close and personal.
Peacefulness and tranquility. I always try to imagine how it must have been years ago with more ice around and also I think how the natives lived without technology.
What is your best advice for guests who are interested in an Alaska voyage?
Be ready and go on all the excursions. Also try to anticipate the weather conditions by wearing warm clothing and protection against the elements. This is an experience that cannot be missed. In Alaska every corner is unique and it must be seen to be believed.
From the picturesque harbor and colorful wood-frame houses of Seward to the magnificent snow-capped peaks of sprawling fjords, Captain Armellino believes Alaska is a destination that unveils new wonders with every visit. View Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ 2016 Alaska voyages.
