Cruise Director’s Log: Skagway, Alaska

By: Lorraine Weimerskirch

Skagway is such a great port with its gold mining town atmosphere of the 1890s. Our guests always have an adventurous romp back in time when walking the wood planked main street. Knowing the day or date often gets away from us when we’re exploring, but today is Father’s Day in the U.S. and so there was a bit of scurrying in and out of shops for that unique Skagway Father’s Day gift that would be presented at dinner onboard this evening.

It makes me wonder about all the old photographs of the many men who came here seeking their fortunes who were fathers away from their families. I stood out on Deck 6 and contemplated what their lives must have been like back then…however, Mother Nature pulled my attention back to the present just in time to see a family of sea lions playing and resting on a buoy. Maybe they are celebrating their own Father’s Day or just another fantastic day in Alaska!
