From Our Table to Yours: Holiday Wines

Senior Executive Cellar Master Oana Maciera shares her favorite wines of the season

Spending the holidays aboard Seven Seas Voyager® , Seven Seas Mariner®  or Seven Seas Navigator®, is truly joyful – especially knowing that you don’t have to worry about preparing meals or party planning.

The ships are transformed into wonderlands with decorations adorning from bow to stern. And a dedicated and talented culinary team of executive chefs, restaurant managers and sommeliers work together to make sure that every meal brings to life the festive spirit of the holidays.

Especially busy during this time of year is Senior Executive Cellar Master Oana Maciera, who oversees the wine service for Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ six-star fleet. She graciously took some time from her busy schedule to share with us her favorite wines of the season for those who are either hosting their own holiday celebrations or are looking for the perfect gift for a wine connoisseur.

Oana, thank you so much for taking the time to sit with us today.

My pleasure! And happy holidays to you.

Happy holidays to you too. Speaking of the holidays, this is the most wonderful time of the year to share wonderful meals with friends and family and, of course, pair those unforgettable dinners with the perfect glass of wine. Could you recommend a red wine that will bring out the flavors of a traditional holiday turkey?

I recommend serving the red blend of Luce Della Vite, Tuscany, Italy 2006. This wine is the brainchild of Vittorio Frescobaldi of Italy’s venerable Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi and Napa Valley icon Robert Mondavi. Together, they produced this Sangiovese/ Merlot blend and it’s an elegant match for a traditional holiday meal.

What would you recommend for white wine enthusiasts?

There are equally as delicious white wines that will pair perfectly with your meal. If your family prefers the more refined taste of Riesling, serve a bottle of Dr. H. Thanisch, Brauneberger Riesling Spätlese 2006. You may enjoy a glass on its own, or pair it perfectly with a holiday ham.

I have a few wine lovers on my gift list, what should I get them?

Red wine lovers will rejoice with a bottle of Artadi Pagos Viejos, Rioja Alavesa 2009. It is a tempranillo based wine that is full-bodied and has a slight acidity. For your white wine lovers, you can’t go wrong with a bottle of Chateau de Chaintré Pouilly Fuisse 2012. This beautiful wine is not an over the top buttery Pouilly Fuissé, rather it is elegant, with just the right amount of richness on the palate expected from the finest Pouilly Fuissés.

And, finally, what are your recommendations for dessert wines?

The best end to a holiday meal is a delicious glass of Dow’s Port, Oporto, Portugal 2000, especially when paired with a Bûche de Noël or Yule log. If you are ending your meal with a scrumptious pumpkin pie, choose the Château d’Yquem 1er Cru Classé, Bordeaux, France 2004, which is an outstanding dessert wine that requires no presentation.

Oana, all of your recommendations sound amazing. Thanks again for sharing.

Whether you are staying close to home or traveling aboard the intimate ships of Regent Seven Seas Cruises this holiday season, may your days brim with happiness and may your glass filled with the perfect wine.
